ASSIGNMENT 8: PILOT USABILITY STUDY

Test Measures

USE OF INTERFACE FEATURES

In the pilot tests, we measured how many times our subjects used nine of PhotoCat's interface features. The data is reported in the Results section.

  • View: Use of the bull's eye view and the grid view.
  • Date Links : Use of the "Previous," "Next," and other date links.
  • Popup Calendar: Use of the popup calendar feature.
  • Date Menus : Use of the drop-down date and range menus.
  • Save Bin as Album: Use of the "Save Bin as Album" the button at the top of the photo bin.
  • Share Bin: Use of the "Share Bin" button at the top of the photo bin.
  • Print Bin: Use of the "Print Bin" button at the top of the photo bin.
  • Location Menu: Use of the "Location" drop-down menu.
  • Friends Menu: Use of the "Friends" drop-down menu.

High use could suggest that the feature is obvious and/or useful. Low use could suggest that the feature is not obvious and/or is not useful.

TIME SPENT ON TASKS

We also recorded the time spent on each task and how the time was split between the two views (bull's eye and grid).

For tasks where the user was given a well-defined goal, shorter times could suggest the system (or a particular view) was easy to use. For more browsing-oriented tasks, the relation of time to ease of use is less clear. Shorter times could suggest that the interface was easy to use. On the other hand, longer times could suggest that the interface was enjoyable to use.
