ASSIGNMENT
8: PILOT USABILITY STUDY
Discussion
of What We Learned
General
Findings
- Users
thought descritive categories such as "outdoors" and
"home" would be useful in the Locations drop-down menu.
- "Click
to add to bin" instructions in mouse-over is confusing (one
subject tried to click the text to add a photo to the bin).
- It's
unclear to subjects whether they should single- or double-click
in the bull's eye to perform an action. Some were not used to
double-clicking inside of a web browser and avoided doing so altogether.
- Users
would like to share directly from grid view for single picture
sharing
- Users
prefer bigger thumbnail images in bull's eye and have difficulty
viewing the very small thumbnails at times.
-
Users employed grid view for better visibility when browsing for
images.
- Screen
real estate is a major limiting factor in the bull's eye view.
- Users
wanted to be able to click-and-drag to move images to the bin.
Subject
#1 Summary
Easy:
- Moving
from week to week in the bull's eye view ("Oh, that's pretty
easy")
- Could
find pictures by approximate date on the bull's eye easily
- Easily
switched between the different time frames in the bull's eye view
"Oh, and this is just one week's worth, so I'll pick month"
- Bull's
eye is great to see the distribution of pictures and find time
with and without photos.
- "I
like the way the bull's eye looks"
- Having
both bull's eye and grid view makes the system easier to use
Difficult:
-
Finding a full-sized photo (double clicking the thumbnail or by
clicking view in the bin)
- Pictures
were not cleared from the bin when an album was created
- Friends
are a good way to organize pictures, but I rarely take pictures
of people
- Overlapping
pictures make it hard to select a single photo in a group
- Expected
the date to go in chronological order, not reverse chronological
Suggested
New Features:
- It
would be easier to see photos if the photos had more space on
the bull's eye
- Could
I make my own categories?
Subject
#2 Summary
Easy:
- Liked
the grid view to browse through images
- "I
kind of like rolling over a photo"
- Liked
finding pictures visually
- The
bull's eye is great for time related tasks
Difficult:
- Thought
words in the rollover should be clickable
- Week,
Month, Year notation was hard to understand...thought she was
always selecting a Monday through Sunday
- Single
and double clicking is hard to understand
- Didn't
see the month label in the bull's eye view
- Month
view is overwhelming with the number of pictures in the system
- Icons
[thumbnails] are too small on the bull's eye
- Grid
view, don't see the clustering like the bull's eye
- Assume
that friends would be a way to tag a picture or create albums
related to friends
Suggested
New Features:
- Would
prefer to share a single picture from the grid
- If
you are doing a single action you shouldn't be required to add
it to the bin
- Add
previous next to the bottom of the grid view page
- Don't
want to see blank days
- Would
be helpful to collapse a slice or a band
- Different
sized bands would make sense
Subject #3 Summary
Easy:
- To
navigate by day in the grid view
- Looked
for "home" location
- Bull's
eye is good for finding pictures around a particular activity
Difficult:
- Tried
to drag pictures into the bin, the photos jumped back to the bull's
eye
- Don't
know metadata information of the photos once they are in the bin
- Can't
see the toilet paper for the cat picture...icon too small
- Don't
know how to add photos to an album or how albums related to the
main view
- Icons
are too small to see
- Didn't
realize the bull's eye date labels are clickable
- Does
viewing bin have anything to do with albums?
Suggested
New Features:
- Would
be useful to be able to zoom in on a wedge
- Collapse
unused bands but still represent the empty day
- Doesn't
want to annotate pictures
- Would
like to do sub-selections of photo bin
- Clicking
on a day ring... the pictures jump and don't stay in the same
sections of the screen
- Pictures
are still clustered from week to day
- Put
selected date in the middle of the week or month time frame. That
way if you are searching for a picture you get some time around
it.
