ASSIGNMENT 5: HOW TO USE IT

The directions below describe how to use the PhotoCat interactive prototype.

START PHOTOCAT

To start the PhotoCat application, open the following URL in a Web browser:

http://fusion.sims.berkeley.edu/sbfisher/

PhotoCat has been tested successfully using the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox. It is recommended you use a monitor resolution of 1152x864 or greater.

CHANGE THE TIME RANGE

PhotoCat displays circular thumbnails atop a “bull’s eye” browsing interface. The thumbnails represent the photos in your collection. The bull’s eye represents a time range.

Currently, PhotoCat supports month, week, and day ranges. When PhotoCat first opens, it displays the most recent week as the time range.

You can change the time range several ways:

  • You can select a new time range (“Month,” “Week,” or “Day”) from the Time Range drop-down menu.
  • You can click the "Previous" or "Next" links in the upper-left corner to move backward or forward in time.
  • You can click a yellow date link within the bull's eye to switch to a narrower time range.

The current time range appears in the upper-left part of the screen above the “Previous” and “Next” links.

FILTER BY LOCATION OR FRIEND

You can filter the thumbnails displayed in the bull's eye using the “Locations” and “Friends” drop-down menus. Currently, PhotoCat allows users to select one location and one friend at a time. Example: If you select “Berkeley” and “John,” PhotoCat will display only the photos associated with the location “Berkeley” and the friend “John” in the current time range.

The default settings for PhotoCat are "All Locations" for Locations and "All Friends” for Friends. These settings represent an unfiltered state.

VIEW DETAILS WITHIN THE BULL’S EYE

You can move your cursor over a thumbnail in the bull’s eye to view a larger version of the photo as well as metadata details. A JavaScript-based window will appear displaying the information.

ADD TO THE PHOTO BIN

The “Photo Bin” located on the right side of the PhotoCat interface allows you to collect and view photos of interest. To add an image to the Photo Bin, click the circular thumbnail for the image.

After you add one or more photos to the Photo Bin, you can perform actions on those photos (see below for details about different actions).

To remove a photo from the Photo Bin, click the “Remove” button below the photo.

VIEW PHOTO DETAILS

To view a large version of a Photo Bin image, you can click the "View" button underneath the photo. A “View Details” popup window appears displaying information about the image.

SHARE PHOTOS (UNDER DEVELOPMENT)

PhotoCat allows you to share photos with others via e-mail. To share all the photos in the Photo Bin, click the “Share” button at the top of the Photo Bin. To share a single photo, click the “Share” button in the “View Details” popup window. A “Share” popup window appears allowing you to specify a recipient e-mail address and a message.

Currently, the PhotoCat system does not include working e-mail functionality. It does display a confirmation page when you try to share.

PRINT PHOTOS (UNDER DEVELOPMENT)

PhotoCat allows you to print photos from your collection. To print all the photos in the Photo Bin, click the “Print” button at the top of the Photo Bin. To print a single photo, click the “Print” button in the “View Details” popup window.

Currently, the PhotoCat system does not include working printing functionality. It does display a confirmation page when you try to print.

CREATE OR ADD TO AN ALBUM (UNDER DEVELOPMENT)

PhotoCat allows you to save a subset of photos as an “album.” You can specify that the current photos in the Photo Bin be saved as a new album. You can also add photos in the Photo Bin or a photo in the “View Details” window to an existing album.

Currently, the PhotoCat system does not include working album functionality.
