Initial Design 1
Following are workflows demonstrating the use of Initial Design 1 by our personas. This design is built on the current IMG system, so some screen shots and workflows show pages already in the system. These are indicated by grey boxes in the workflows. The existing areas in screen mockups are indicated in the commentary or in mockup text.
This design assumes three levels of user--nonmember, member and fellow--in order of increasing privilege. The levels are used to prevent abuse of the system by nonscientists. A rating system is also employed, allowing fellows to vote on the correctness of annotations. The votes appear where the full annotations are shown, and a "batting average" is given for the most recent annotator. The batting average is simply the total number of "agree" votes over the total number of votes for all the annotations a person has entered (including edits to existing annotations). Members become fellows when they have entered 10 annotations and have achieved a batting average above .500. Automatic annotation algorithms will also have batting averages, because they are treated like another annotator whose work can be agreed or disagreed with. Thus, any annotation in the system provides statistics to help researchers determine how reliable the annaotation is.
