Thoughtless Acts

I noticed that I tend to modify my bed in order to utilize it for purposes other than sleeping, whether it be reading, watching a movie, or using a computer. In this instance, I've stacked my pillows to prop my head up while reading a book.
 
A possible design solution for this would be an interactive bed that senses such activities and responds accordingly. The bed itself could transform into a more upright position so that stacked pillows are not necessary at all. 

Thoughtless Acts – Clint Anderson
Our midterm project is large scale, pressure sensitive pad. It can be used to monitor and track user input with a surface that is much larger than the standard small (laptop) touchpad and with more varied objects than the standard finger or stylus:

Thoughtless Act
 
The thoughtless act that I chose to focus on is the innate need to touch surfaces. Especially large, smooth surfaces such as the Chicago Bean and even globes.
 
The two pictures I included are of two friends of mine posing with the Chicago Bean. Notice how both are, whether they’re looking at the sculpture or not, touching the surface.

1. a) An individual comfortably hugs a pillow as he's taking a nap
2. b) Two people  "cuddle" or "spoon" 

These are the thoughtless acts that I came up with:
1. Hairbands on a Lampshade

People on the streets tend to look at their reflections when they walk pass mirrors or glasses on the street. Sometimes kids are also drawn to their own reflections out of curiosity or out of playfulness. For the grown-ups it may be their self-awareness. It may be really brief, or a real thorough check on their own appearances. Perhaps the inclusion of their own image will get the person more involved in the user interface he/she is using?

My pen has a football on it, which you could spin around. This is similar to a world globe; people spin it without thinking about it. Thus, not really taking advantage of the environment, but more taking advantage of physical abilities, I think.
1. What is happening in the scene?
During the lecture on Monday, Stuart was spinning the ball on my pen and I caught him doing so. This was a thoughtless act because he did was not even consciously spinning the ball around.
2. Possible physical or digital design solutions?

1) The Thoughtless Acts that I focused on are ways that people find to indicate which team they are during pick-up sports. The most common thoughtless act that occurs is the typical division of teams into “shirts vs. skins” where one team will remove their shirts. This of course is very much limited to games which are composed of predominantly male and teen or older players.

1) What is happening in the scene?

In this thoughtless act, a cloth string has been marked along its length and is being used to judge the distance between a residence and on-campus locations. Because of the lack of a key on the map, it seems that the black markings on the string correspond to approximate walking times. This thoughtless act could be a reflection of the map viewer's desire to judge the amount of time it will take for him or her to make it to their destination.
