In this thoughtless act, a cloth string has been marked along its length and is being used to judge the distance between a residence and on-campus locations. Because of the lack of a key on the map, it seems that the black markings on the string correspond to approximate walking times. This thoughtless act could be a reflection of the map viewer's desire to judge the amount of time it will take for him or her to make it to their destination. A possible virtual design solution would be an interface in which the map viewer can trace a path on the map and an estimated walking time can be calculated.
