Midterm Project 2: Project Progress Sketches

Problem Area:

Allowing residential occupants a way to save energy in manner that interfaces with their natural daily interactions with their home environment. Our users are homeowners who want to save energy, but often forget or don't know how to do so. They need a interface which integrates with actions they do regardless of their awareness of the home's current energy use as well as provides motivating feedback to save energy.

The concept of this installation is a metaphor of secrets as drops of water. You write your secret on a slip of paper and drop it into a well. The secrets are broken down into their individual words. Each word is then incorporated into a cloud projection on the ceiling. The words of the secret turn over each other in the cloud; disappearing and reappearing. As more secrets are dropped in the well the clouds becomes heavier and heavier with secret words and the sky becomes stormy.

We explore 2 ideas in our prototypes.

In our first prototype, we are interested in the idea of shadow puppets. Paper football involves a lot of the hands. We are interested in turning physical hand movements into shadow puppets. This video inspired this prototype.
