Assignment 1: Project Proposal

Problem Statement:

The 21st century gold rush is in China. As the country emerges as both the world's largest consumer market and as a major business contender, increasing numbers of foreign companies are seeking to cash in by establishing value chain relationships, joint ventures or regional offices in China. Other individuals are moving to China to start up companies. To better prepare for the competition and better understand the situation for their industry in China, these prospectors need a multitude of resources: books, industry analyst reports, online news, and newgroups. Users must contend with information overload and outdated information

Internet portals are currently the best solution for consolidated, recent information. However portals on China (e.g. Sina.com, China.com, Sohu.com) tend to follow the newspaper paradigm, presenting text-heavy information which is therefore time-intensive for users. Many such portals try to be all things to all users, offering news as well as games and dating services. Other portals simply aggregate links to articles that are no longer accessible (e.g. ChinaSite.com).

Our Solution:

We are designing a graphical, interactive portal application that supports market research and business development activities relating to China. Our project leverages various resources -- such as news stories, weblogs, newsgroups and databases -- regarding consumer and business trends in specific cities in China. Students studying China, people and companies interested in working in China or with Chinese companies will be able to quickly view trends for specific industries over time. Users can also track industry-specific news in China and related commentary, view the growth of their industry in the major booming regions in China, and research newsworthy companies in China.
