Statement of Informed Consent for Usability Study

A group of Masters students in the School of Information Management and Systems at UC Berkeley is conducting a study to test the interface of an Internet book-selling system.

If you vounteer to participate in this study, you will be asked to work with a computer prototype of an interface, performing basic tasks related to book buying and selling. We will record your oral comments during the test. We may also take pictures of you doing particular tasks. These comments and pictures may be used in a research paper. However, they will not be attributed to you directly.

In exchange for your participation today, you will receive a Starbucks gift certificate, or an hour of grammar editing for a paper of your choice. This test poses virtually no risk; you will be clicking through a web site completing three tasks. We will associate an ID number with any notes we take and will keep no record of the link between your name and ID number. We will not name you if and when we discuss your behavior in research publications. We will only refer to you by your ID number in any research paper.
