I will be designing an interface for a mobile application I am building. The application is designed to take speech input in one language and translate and synthesize it in another language. I will be synthesizing the aesthetic principles discussed in this class with my knowledge of user-interface design principles to attempt to develop an interface that is pleasing both on an behavioral and on a visceral level.
I intend to pay equal parts of attention to behavioral and visceral processing. On the visceral side, I wish to apply what we have discussed relating to:
Of course, the limitations of the medium in which I am programming the interface may constrain how I am able to apply certain of the techniques. I will see as I design the interface how I might apply the principles of the class best.
I intend to explore aesthetics by examining color through the mathematics of modular origami. I think that examining the various properties of colors and how they are displayed could be illustrated in a unique way through this medium. I also think the medium lends itself to a unique model of some of the geometic shapes we see in the natural world and coupling this with color theory (also from the natural world) could yield some interesting results.
I’d like to explore print media for the MIMS final project that I’m working on, which is a mobile application that ties electronic notes to physical locations.
A couple of things I’m considering:
Mini-Leaflet / Handout
This would be a small informational print media that could be handed out to interested passersby. Because of its limited space, layout design will be an important factor in maximizing its usefulness without sacrificing visceral aesthetics. Moreover, a portion of my focus will be on logo design.
Project Book
By comparison, this would be significantly more in-depth. I’ll need to consider page layout, cover / casing design, and user interaction with each of its components.
Final Project Poster
This is an informational poster (2′ x 3′ portrait layout) that will provide a snapshot of the final project.
For each of these, I’ll need to employ what we’ve talked about concerning color theory, layout strategy, materials and type pairings, as they will vary for different types and sizes of print media.
I will design an interface for a toolkit I am implementing. It’s a toolkit for community-based user interface design. it will provide large user communities with certain capacities to take part in the user interface design and evaluation process.
I will use the guidelines and examples of the color, layout and typography sessions to create a very discreet and plain design. The user of the toolkit should not be distracted from his actual task - designing interfaces himself.
As print media I’m planning both a project poster and a small flyer/booklet. Both will briefly describe the process of community-based interface design.
My final project will form an extension to the work I am doing for my Information Visualization class. The group visualization project I am working on focuses on data from the charities, comparing and aggregating information about different non-profit organizations to give the viewer a visible overview of the sector. The end result will be a website showcasing our visualization tool and the process we used to develop it.
My project for Interface Aesthetics will complement this work in additional media that moves beyond the desktop interface. While the visualization interface we develop will most likely be oriented toward exploratory analysis of the data, my Interface Aesthetics project will be focused on presenting interesting elements from the analysis in a compelling visual format. This presentation will take advantage of the size and resolution of off-screen formats to portray a narrative about the data that would be difficult to realize in a desktop environment. Depending on the media most appropriate to the type of findings I choose to represent, this format may include print media and/or installation-scale elements – I’m interesting in creating a long printed fold-out piece, or a wall-size presentation, to play with a visual scale that is impossible to approach on the screen. Where the visualization we create for the Information Visualization course will include traditional user interface elements, my work for Interface Aesthetics will be interactive in another sense, allowing the viewer to approach the data in physical space. The piece would rely heavily on the concepts we’ve discussed in class, drawing on typography, principles of layout, and color theory to create a compelling presentation.
For my final course project I will be exploring aesthetics in the context of a virtual world. For my Mixing and Remixing Information class I am working (with Shawna) on SLickr, a flickr media screen for Second Life. I want to build upon that project by exploring intuitive ways of leaving comments about photos and aesthetically pleasing ways to display such information without being distracting or annoying.
I will focus on how elements of type, color, and layout apply in a three-dimensional, interactive space like Second Life.
Some of my preliminary ideas include having the comments float up on bubbles around the screen or possibly appear on leaves of branches/vines that surround the screen. It might also be interesting to display comments on a “graffiti wall” type space that the media screen would be mounted on.
I am hoping to apply the concepts of interface aesthetics to my Master’s Final Project: iNaturalist. iNaturalist provides a place for nature enthusiasts to record and organize their nature findings, meet others with similar interests, and learn more about the natural world. While our website and logo have already been created, I am hoping to design a set of images to complement our logo and create an assortment of print media to complement our project in general. This assortment would perhaps include a set of stickers, a tee-shirt design, and a small handout.
The interface I am going to present for my final project is a from a project I am doing in Germany for the European research lap of NTT DoCoMo. Basically, we (a team of 6 students) are designing and implementing a prototype of an intelligent shopping cart. The main feature of it, is a location based indoor navigation system, which allows the cart to navigate its customer to the articles on their shopping list. The digital shopping list, which can be transferred by Bluetooth or NFC can be modified using the interface of the smart cart. In addition the cart will also provide detailed product information and the possibility to call a salesperson. Besides the interface I am going to present a couple of print media (booklet, Flyer, cardboard) that try to explain the features of the cart and their use cases.
Sorry, I’m late. I thought it was due Sunday as usual.
My class project would most likely be a sort of an interactive/education section (flash?) for a research project on human spine that my research advisor is performing jointly with UCSF. I’ll try to use layout and colour techniques discussed in class. For the printed media part, I will likely do a small educational brochure.
Aylin and I are working on a project involving streaming Flickr photos into second life. You can read about this in her post We are each going to design different aspects of this interaction. While she is focusing on how to display comments, I’m going to focus on how to design an interface between avatars and users that engages groups of users and takes advantage of the 3D aspect of Second Life.
While I have not quite decided on my final ideas, I am thinking of focusing on some kind building block/flickr photo mashup, so avatars can collaboratively create 3D objects by building things out of their photos.
This will no doubt involve thinking about several things we’ve learned about in class, most specifically color, layout and “beyond the desktop on the desktop,” so, how to design an interaction that has elements of “beyond the desktop” (a 3d avatar centric environment) but will still be displayed on a screen.
I am going to be conceptualizing and designing the front page of the Word.Sound.Life social network. Since this project is being designed to be a social network for media production and learning specifically geared towards kids in inner city schools, I have decided to take artwork that is familiar to urban environments and incorporate this into my design. I am going to be heavily using graffiti art in my design and I am looking to give the page the look and feel of an inner city street. I want the users to be able to navigate the page by mousing over and clicking on different parts of the artwork to go to different parts of our site.
I am using Gimp, graffiti fonts, and HTML to create the page. Additionally I am going to be producing a graffitti sketchbook as a printed artifact to hand out to the general public. This will allow the general public to not only take away a piece of graffiti art with them, but it will encourage them to try their own hand at creating their own piece of graffiti art.
I am planning to redo my TUI class project “Empathy Mirror” from last semester. Since this course is not an implementation class, I will focus on the aesthetic perspective and leave the technology part for the future.
Empathy Mirror is a technology that enhances users’ ability to empathize with their friends’ feeling. We transformed the mirror, an ordinary everyday object, and incorporated a new digital interface, facial expression recognition, data transmission and image manipulation technologies. The outcome of this project bridges the communication gap created by remote communication such as telephone and online chatting.
The results for this project will include a model, a video clip to describe the design concept, and print media such as a poster, a handout, and a business card. I will keep the interactions consistent in all products; the actions users play with Empathy Mirror will be similar to the way they interact with print media. For example, the handout can be folded and become a photo frame. Users can change the photo just as they can change the image on the Empathy Mirror. I will use reflective materials on the print media give an illusion of a mirror. The shape of print media will also be identical to the Empathy Mirror.
For the color, I will play with the principles of color combination. For example, the major color scheme will be a warmer color matching with the complementary one, such as orange with light blue. I will apply the knowledge about font and font match, layout and grid, as well as symbol and icon I learned so far from this course to the design of Empathy Mirror.
Apologies for the delay.
My final project is tentatively titled Imperium Mechanica. It is an expansion of my personal fiction story about a world of robots. I will be using concept learned in the class to create a design template for the world and characters, and use it to give some background information on the world and its story.
I will be working to improve the aesthetics of the virtual shelf visualization. I will be looking at how the shelf can utilize size and color, social experiences, and any other mappings from a real world shelf to the virtual. This will likely take the form of a series of mockups created in illustrator along with a brief report of the functions included and their rationales.
I apologize for the delay in posting. Since I had to miss one class, I was not aware that there was an assignment due.
For the final project, I will be working on aesthetic treatment for a web application that I have been working on, called whtwhnwhr. This web application lets the user interact with event calendars in a way that makes it easier to find events that are relevant. Borrowing from several concepts that we have learnt this semester, I hope to make it as useful and aesthetically pleasing as possible. An early version of the application can be seen here. http://people.ischool.berkeley.edu/~srikanth/whtwhnwhr/go
For the print media, I will be working on a brochure that describes the application, highlights its usefulness anf explicates the design considerations that went into the design of the application.
i’m working on thesis show.
one of projects is a collection of travel stories. I plan to build a website for the audiences to check each stories and images.
second project is a podcasting website. I will draw a map/reprint google map , which I recorded the soundscape while I was walking the route.
also I will design postcards for both of the projects.
I will be doing a series of designs to show off the Mixing/remixing class work.
I think that I can make cards or a small pamphlet for each project, a poster advertising the presentations, and something small for each project.
