Sensing Part 1: Potentiometers

This lab expanded on the three LED circuit we built last week. Instead of using serial communication through the computer to alter the output of the LEDs, I used analog inputs from potentiometers (pots) to change their states. Pots are circuit components that have variable resistance depending on the physical state those components are in (i.e. degree of rotation). I used an Arduino Uno Microcontroller to read pot values through analog inputs and control the output of the LEDs as a function of the pots.

Took my existing LED circuit and added in a potentiometer in order to control the blinking speed.  To prep the potentiometer, I soldered a ground, 5v and analog wire to it.  Then I connected the analog wire to the analog output on the Arduino board and the 5v wire to the power source on the board.  The ground wire was connected to an appropriate ground area as well.  Once done, I uploaded new code to take advantage of the pot and the blinking became controllable by twisting the pot to higher/lower settings.

I chose to use two potentiometers, one that controlled brightness, and the other to control blinking rate of a single LED. However, to make things more interesting, I stripped a wire and used it as a touch sensor using code found here: http://playground.arduino.cc/Code/CapacitiveSensor

My submission has three potentiometers, which control three LEDs. One controls color (the LEDs cycle smoothly from red to blue to green), one controls brightness, and one controls blink rate.

For my assignment, I chose to control 3 LEDs with 2 Potentiometers. 1 Pot controls the blinking speed, while the 2nd Pot controls the intensity/hue of the LEDs. I played around with making the lights light up at different speeds and alternate (1-2-3), but the blinking lights started to blend at higher speeds. Afterwards, I reverted the code to my original, which controls hue/brightness and blinking speed with the two potentiometers.
