Recruitment/Instructions for Participants:

Dear friend,

As part of a statistics and usability course (SIMS271) in the School of

Information Management Systems (http://sims.berkeley.edu/), we are

conducting a very brief survey on Search Engine Use.  There are 32 brief

questions about your use of Search Engines.  We would greatly appreciate it

if you could please fill out the survey at your earliest convenience:

http://www.netraker.com/code/delivery.asp?action=IE&SID=376443&FID=358245

All responses to the survey are completely anonymous.  The responses are for

course research purposes only.  Do not hesitate to contact us with

questions.

Thank you for your help,

Pilot Test

Initial pilots were performed on paper, while the final iteration and ultimate deployment were using a web-based method. The survey instrument was designed in several iterations. Team members drafted the initial survey, using our own experience and other search-related survey instruments and past research results as sources. The survey was initially piloted with 3 participants, on paper with a team member at hand to observe and answer questions. The paper pilot pointed to the potential for dissonance between asking people their favorite search engine, and presuming the set of frequently used engines was identical, as mentioned in the analysis. As a result, we added a separate question asking respondents to identify the engines they used frequently, in addition to the question regarding their favorite engines.

This subsequent iteration was piloted online by email to approximately five participants, to fine-tune the survey instrument as well as test the web-based survey for problems. We made no changes as a result of the online pilot.

Pilot participants were selected from the same pool as the final sample (technically knowledgable, 'Internet savvy' individuals).
