Permission of instructor is required for attendance.
It is preferable but not required for students to have some background
in information retrieval and human-computer interaction. Students lacking
in background may be asked to read materials in addition to those assigned
for general discussion.
Students who have little background in information access are
encouraged to get familiar with important readings. You may want to
read papers from Part II of the Fall 97 SIMS 202 reader. You
can order a copy at Copy Central on Bancroft. Call 510-848-8649 and
ask for either Muji or Gary and tell them you want a copy of the
SIMS202 reader Part II. It takes a couple days for them to produce
the reader.
More good background reading can be found in the book by Frakes and
Baeza-Yates, Information Retrieval: Data Structures and Algorithms,
Prentice Hall, 1992. I have one copy that I can lend out.
