Locating and understanding documents and information sources always requires a mixture of "anthropology" ("observing their use") and "archeology" ("digging into their history"). Document designs are often the most enduring aspects of business processes, lasting for years or decades, far longer than the tenures of the specific people who produce and use documents. How we conduct "document anthropology and archeology" differs substantially among three different contexts:
