Our goal with this project is to create a device that can improve the experience for someone who is confined to a bed. The experience of being confined to a bed is frustrating for people and forces changes upon their lives. They experience a more limited lifestyle and may miss the connection with the world around them and those they love.
With this design we want patients in a hospital to be able to feel connected to their loved ones. By viewing messages on the ceiling, they can remember those who love them and are wishing them well.
An intent with this concept is to give patients more control. It’s frustrating for many people when they’re confined to a bed and lose control of some aspects of their lives. We’d like for a feature of this design to give them the ability to communicate with family members and friends.
Possible Features:
Mobile works as a control for the projector, webcam holder (webcam shows family members how the person is), speaker holder (speaker can play music, voice messages, etc)
The message and image contents for the projector can be received via sms, email etc.
Emotional needs:
- One of the hanging items enables the patient or family member to record audio. A person can touch/squeeze the item and hear the message played back [inspiration, the ‘whisper blanket’ which records memories of loved ones]
- To improve the communicaiton aspect, we are considering to add phone call feature, too; someone can pull down (from the mobile) a picture of a person. When they pull down an iPhone at the same time it then automatically makes a phone call to that person.
Basic needs:
- A cup hanging from the mobile can be pulled down, which indicates that the patient is thirsty.
We’d like for the items hanging from the mobile to be made of different materials with different textures. [to give good affordance to pull/touch]
