SIMS
202: Information Organization and Retrieval
The Photo Project
The Photo Project is
an innovative hands-on project for you and your colleagues in
SIMS 202 Information Organization and Retrieval. The
project entails the documentation of life at SIMS and UC Berkeley
using small, inexpensive digital cameras by teams of students,
and the annotation and retrieval of these photos. You and your
project group will design application use scenarios for the web-based
photo database you will create, and develop and refine metadata
descriptors for your photos.
The outcome of
this project will be a sensible and usable classification to structure
and describe photos that depict life at Sims and UC Berkeley,
a browser application that let's you look at your photos within
their classificatory structure as well as proposed real-world
web-applications that would use the photo database and its classification.

Photo Project Part 5: Assignment
5 - Metadata Consolidation (2 weeks)
Main
tasks: |
-
Determine
main facets
- New group formation
- Consolidation work |
Assignment
5 (due Oct. 10)
Please keep in mind
that:
- Although some of the top-level
facets have been removed they could still appear as sub-facets
under another top-level facet.
- Within your facet design group,
you can form new top-level facets if you deem it necessary.
You will be responsible for this new top-level facet as well.
It is also necessary to confer with and get agreement from the
Facet Oversight Group.
- You may decide that you need
to transfer one or more of your sub-facets to another Facet
Design group. To do so, you need to confer with and get agreement
from them and the Facet Oversight Group.
Facet Oversight Group Information:
Tasks will include the following:
- First meet together to ensure
goals and standards for the consolidated classification and
identify any issues across facets.
- Alert the affected facet groups
of any potential issues.
- Have one formal check-in in
which facet groups send in a near-final draft of their facet
and terms.
- Provide feedback to the facet
groups.
- Receive final draft from facet
groups.
- Make any changes to final draft
in consultation with affected facet groups.
And the Facet Committees are...
Facet Oversight
Group
Tasks: ensure consistency of format, concepts, and lack
of unnecessary overlap among the facets; manage issues regarding
the whole classification and any inter-facet issues.
