Grading and grades

Grading components and weights

Students are expected to participate actively in classroom discussions and on-line forums, contribute to their group projects, do homework, and assimilate and understand the readings.

Grades will be based on:

10% Classroom discussion

15% Participation in on-line forums

15% Assignments

25% Midterm exam

35% Final exam

Grading will be on a curve, shooting for a class average GPA of about 3.2 to 3.4.

Grades

Grades are posted by the last four digits of the Student ID.

Homework grades

The homeworks are graded on a ten-point scale. We have examined your homework primarily to see if you made a conscientious attempt, but did not judge the quality of your answer in great detail. Calibration:

10 = extraordinary effort, outstanding job

8 = good conscientious effort

6 = reasonably attempt, but answers appear superficial

4 = only partial or incomplete answers, or only partially done

0 = did not turn in

Grades are posted by the last four digits of the SID and the due date. Please let the instructor know if a homework you turned in is not credited below, and we will check into it. If you turned in group homework, let me know whose sent the message.

Participation grades

The following is based solely on your self assessment. Please make sure it is correct; i.e. what you sent in. Adjustments to these grades may be made by the instructor later. If you did not submit a self assessment, your grade is 0.0.

For the forum, the grade "net" is the product of quantity and quality. The quantity grade rewards a larger number of postings, although not on a linear scale.

Exam grades

Midterm

On the multiple-choice part, the following answers were given 50% credit, because in my judgement they were less correct but nevertheless not significantly less correct than the answer that got full credit:

2e, 5c, 9c, 12a,c,d, 18a,c, 20a,d,e, 21e, 22c,e

Also, full credit was given for 17c

Note that the second midterm question has not been graded yet. Thus, the maximum score is 67%. All three components are weighted equally.
