American Radio Archives and Museum

As explained in this article from my hometown newspaper, the American Radio Archives and Museum is a "a still-growing collection [of radio broadcasts] that began in 1984 and now boasts some 30,000 audio recordings, 40,000 scripts and 150,000 photographs." It's especially focused on the "Golden Age" of radio from the 30s and 40s, before television became dominant, and is "one of the largest radio broadcasting collections in the world."

The Spaces In-Between: Lessons from Relocating the Barnes Foundation Collection

What is left to arrange if you are a museum and the precise layout--wall-by-wall and room-by-room--of your latest collection have been mandated by legal ruling?  This is the challenge encounteterd in rehousing the artwork comprising the Barnes Foundation Collections in downtown Philadelphia. The organization of the artwork is constrained to replicate the arragement created by the original owner and currator of the collection, Albert Barnes.

NYPD and Microsoft Create a Next Generation Law Enforecement Big Data Solution

We hear the term "big data" on a daily basis but usually in the context of how companies can leverage large amounts of consumer data, tweets, and likes to make business decisions. I came across an article which highlights how the way information is organized is making major changes to the way our government and law enforcement will operate in the future. Big data meets the New York Police Department.

Is Facebook Yesterday's News in the Presidential Race?

In our second lecture, Professor Glushko mentioned that modern information systems have evolved a great deal from the days of stone slabs and cuneiform. He added that the social nature of today's web services enables "continuous aggregation of information, crowd sourcing, and community generated content." In my quest to find out how these new web services are actually used, I stumbled upon an article in the National Journal called, "Is Facebook Yesterday's News in the Presidential Race?" (http://www.nationaljournal.com/daily/can-facebook-get-out-the-vote--2012...)

King County Archives now using Pinterest

An interesting piece of news came up on my feed today about King County Archives using the social media platform Pinterest in order to spread awareness of their historical photos to a wider audience. They established different boards, each with dozens of photos from their archives "ranging from old maps to artwork to images of the 1962 World's Fair". Considering we just discussed archives and the way they approach digitization of their work, I found this to be an interesting convergence of what we covered in class with a contemporary social media platform.
