My primary 'thoughtless act' was remembering to do this assignment.  :)

Beyond that, I decided to focus on thoughtless acts involving locking bikes.  I noticed other students had pointed out how people use available poles as an obvious place to lock their bikes.  However, often people who use these poles are unware of the actual utility of this act.  By assuming that a pole and a ulock is sufficient, they often 'mis-lock' their bikes as a result.

For example,  this ride has used a little tiny chain to carefully wrap up all of the parts of his/her bike, then has forgotten to include any part of the rack in the locking equation.

And in these pictures, the lock goes around the outside of all frame parts and an open pole.  Someone could just lift this bike up and over to remove it.

This guy simply forgot to actually lock his lock:

And finally, this person only locked the front spokes (a very common 'thoughtless act'.  Often theives will just unhook the front wheel and take the rest of the bike (or even clip the spokes with wire cutters).

Last, while this isn't related to locking, it's a common act on BART.  Riders will use the handicap/wheelchair area in order to be able to hold the bike between their legs while they ride.
