Standing in the shade

Assignment: Thoughtless Acts

Collaborators:

At the hot dog stand where I have lunch, you have to wait a few minutes for your food after you order.  Because the hot dog stand is in a very sunny area at the end of Sproul Plaza and there isn't any natural cover around, it gets very hot.  As a result, people waiting for their hot dog stand in strange positions, often to the side or behind the stand, in order to stay in the shade.

Effectively, the hot dog stand can control where people stand by where they create shade.  If they wanted to, they could easily set up two lines (one for ordering and one for waiting, say) by setting up shading umbrellas -- they wouldn't even need explicit signs.

(This is hard to get a picture of, because people think you're creepy if you're taking pictures of them while they stand in line to get a hot dog.)
