People are becoming more mindful of energy consumption – both in terms of household utility costs and environmental impacts – yet there are few convenient ways in which household energy consumption can be visualized. The Powerglass aims to fill in this gap by offering an ambient visualization of real-time and cumulative energy consumption in a household. Using an hourglass metaphor, current energy consumption is conveyed by the dripping of water in an hourglass, and monthly energy usage is tracked at the base of the hour glass in a curve of diffused LED lights. This art installation aims to be ambient and beautiful, but also a useful gauge of energy consumption over time.
