Searching by Browsing

This could be a dynamically generated list that would provide any user with the ability to scan material according to some particular order or interest.

For example, we could organize the documents at the top level by:

  • Document Type
  • People
  • Dates
  • Places
  • Events
  • When a person moved their mouse over any of the categories, a list of subcategories could be displayed using a drop down menu (would require javascript, Dynamic HTML, or the like). This way the person could view the subcategories without being sent to a new page. Subcategories for some of the categories listed above could be:

Document Type (Audio and video may not fit here.)

  • Transcripts
  • Books
  • Articles
  • Audio
  • Video
  • Etc.
  • People
  • Alice Paul
  • Mabel Vernon
  • Etc.
  • (We would need to decide how many people we would list.)
  • Dates
  • 1910
  • 1911
  • 1912
  • etc.
  • After selecting a subcategory, a new page would display the full list of documents in that subcategory. In general, documents could be arranged in alphabetical order, but for the dates category, they should be arranged in chronological order if possible. For all categories other than document type, icons indicating the document type could be displayed next to the document. (For example, the audio symbol could be next to all audio files in the Alice Paul subcategory. Another possibility is grouping documents by document type in the list.
