An XML Schema is an XML document:

• Namespace:

  http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema

• Document Element:

  schema

The attribute 'targetNamespace' specifies the namespace that the schema defines.

So we start with:

NOTE: This slides will always use 'xs' for the prefix of the schema namespace.
