Trashcan as a door stopper and motherboard as a display item
Thoughtless Act Item 1:
The trashcan is used as a door stopper in BiD. BiD is notorious for giving late access to people who work there. So many people who come there frequently don't have access card to enter the BiD halls. If you want to go out of the building (for example to get some water), you don't the want the door to close behind you. So, its common to see people use trashcans to stop the door from closing. What's remarkable is that even if the door stopper is lying right next to the door, people either avoid it or don't know what its for or even don't trust it since it is very small and may not hold the door. Transhcan provides a reliable affordance for stopping the door.
Design Implication: A door stopper should be included in the design of the doors so as to make sure it doesn't close behind a person. A separate door stopper is bad design because it gets kicked around and also doesn't look like its meant for the door. Alternatively, the door shouldn't lock automatically unless specified.
Thoughtless Act Item 2:
I found the Prof. Brian Carver has put a mother-board on display outside his office. Generally professors use the display board to display pictures, interesting articles, posters or even beautiful art objects on the board. I think Prof. Carver thinks motherboard as a beautiful factory art item and I concur. The mother board is extremely interesting and a pretty piece of arti-fact which most people don't get to see ever.
Design Implication: There seems to be a market for transparent laptop and desktop casings which people can use to show-off the internals of their computers as a beautiful artifacts.
