Around the mechanical engineering labs, we have lots of things we need to keep track of and only limited desk space. Here are some occurrences of engineers making due:

Storage: One of the sets of pictures shows items around lab (calipers and parts) being stored on the side of desks and filing cabinets. These are items that are used frequently and need access, but there's not enough room on the desk. One picture shows an old hard drive magnet being used to mount the calipers. The safety glasses are also stored on top of the computer so that there is a highly visible place for a well-used item.

Wiring: When you can't find or are too lazy to actually mount wires, you use boxes, pipes or any other fixture to hang your wires.
