Tell me your secrets
Our project idea is to create an installation which depicts secrets that people whisper to another person across the room from them. We proposed creating this installation in Grand Central station which has a room where the structure allows people to stand on opposite sides of the room and wispher to each other. The sounds travels up the wall, across the ceiling and down the other wall to the person on the other-side of the room.
We propose creating a visualization that shows the letters traveling up the wall as people talk and then as the words travel across the ceiling they are “caught” in a cloud visual that is projected on the ceiling. As more people tell secrets the cloud projection ,which started out as sunny and bright, gets darker and more ominous. When a critical mass of secrets have been shared, the clouds can no longer hold the secret words and the words of the secrets then pour down as rain on a side wall. People would be able to interact with the word/rain as it falls.
In our presentation some of the critique centered around how we would make sure that curse words were not projected and how this installation would look visually. We believe that accounting for vandalizing behaviour is outside the scope of this project. However we will be using Processing and video to ensure that the visual element of this projects is communicated effectively.
In the amount of time that we have we will not be able to create an installation that could be installed in the Grand Central Station space. However, we will be making a prototype of this experience that will include: voice to text, the word visualization up the wall, the word cloud visualization and (we hope) the interactive rain visualization. The visualization for this prototype will be projected on a single surface that than on multiple surfaces.
In addition to the reference we included in our midterm project, two other projects will inform our work:
We will work together to build the tangible parts. Prayag will work primarily on the voice to text and the motion detection element of this project. Ariel will take the lead on the word visualizations. Both will help and contribute to the other’s work as needed,
