I decided to experiment with vibrational output. To create eccentric weights I tried a few things: oval cardboard pieces (which flew off at high speeds!), a screw, an off-center penny, and a mini diary key. I noticed that the motor often has to reach a higher output speed to overcome the resting inertia of the weight, but that once it has started spinning it can be reduced again until a lower speed at which it will finally not be able to spin again. I used this lower minimum speed to compare the possible ranges for each of the last three eccentric weights as well as the effective vibration created by them. The penny had the smallest range (minimum at ~125), and the screw, which had the largest range (~70-255) was too eratic because of how it was attached which allowed it to swing around too much with the tape. The key fit the most securely and had a similarly large range from 80-255. Range was a factor because I wanted to be sure that my game output would have detectable differences in levels of vibration.
The game that I made is called ‘Stampede!’ and the goal is to not get trampled (obviously). The player can move the avatar along the Y axis to evade animals. Each level increases the size of the stampeding herd and the animal is randomly selected from a list at the start of each round so you never know what you’ll be dodging next. The DC motor, attached to an egg-carton bull, provides visual and auditory feedback to the player at it vibrates. Vibration increases the closer the player comes to being run over and vibrates three times when you get trampled.
