On a recent group trip to Hawaii, we were sitting on the lawn on the ocean-side of our hotel watching the sunset. I had my camera and was taking pictures of the sunset when I turned around and noticed that everyone was on their phones! I attached the photo of the sunset and my friends on their devices.
In times of waiting or boredom, I have noticed people default to their phones for entertainment. Even when watching the sunset. Furthermore, people notice others in their peripheral on their devices and take this as a sign of accecptability of their action. The phone has become a widely accepted crutch for entertainment.
Our midterm project is the touch screen for large scale interactions. I imagine a system that can detect very little movement and a backlit screen via the floor panels and camera, respectively. This would signify a distracting interaction with your phone and somewhat of a trance that could or should be broken. We could use the output method (preferably in the floor tiles themselves) to place animations at the users feet, enough of a subtle hint to get them off their device and back to watching the sunset.
