Our Cuckoo clock uses a drawbridge style door made from foam-board, paper, and wood. The movement of the bird is controlled by a linkage similar to example 1 in the assignment description. This linkage mechanism has an adjoining stick that extends the movement from the top of the linkage mechanism to the drawbridge door, which:
opens the door at the same rate as the bird's movement, and
opens the door before the bird comes out.
The linkage mechanism is adhered to the base of the foam-board. The bird is adhered to the top of the linkage mechanism which serves as a platform for the bird.
