I walked around Berkeley to find people using crutches or find some thoughtless act people commit while just walking.
I found a guy walking with crutches as shown in the attachment. He seemed to be walking away from the crowd always maintaining his personal space, even though he was crossing the street and should have stayed on the crossing tracks. It might be to insure he doesn't accidentally hurt anyone with his crutches, or to just stay away from people walking in to him. He took advantage of the space available to him while crossing, as there are no cars on the other side of the road and walked at an incline to everyone else.
A design solution for our project which also involves the use of crutches would be to allow the users to see an indicator of the proximity of the people around him/her. It could be some sort of visual feedback, where the crutches change color from neutral to yellow to orange based on the personal space available to him. A projector could also project a square of space around him/her so that other people will think twice before encroaching his personal space.
