What is it?
A set of networked wine glasses that allow individuals to connect with other like-minded individuals at dating events.
Who is it for?
Individual who are ‘looking for love’ and are frustrated with attending speed dating events where they may or may not meet someone who shares their interests. We hope to help them identify the people they should be speaking with, and help them break through the clutter.
Why is it valuable?
It is really hard to find like-minded individuals to date. Research on interpersonal attraction always emphasize the importance of physical attributes over other factors such as personality and intelligence (e.g., Dion et al. 1972; Walster et al. 1966). We hope to allow users to discover potential mates who share similar interests, and are likely to be more attractive to them, than an interest based on looks alone.
How does it Work?
The tangible metaphor we will use to signal similarity is a glowing wine glass. These wine glasses will have LEDs linked to Arduinos which will control color and brightness of the glass. As a person approaches someone who shares interests, both their wine glasses will begin to glow. The degree of intensity of the color denotes the degree of similarity. We will begin with only calculating a similarity score to make a recommendation, however, we can also explore ways to incorporate other parameters to calculate a better match between two individuals.
Our approach will be based on heuristics of few empirical feature sets and then use those to ascertain the palatability of given individuals.
The similarity algorithm will be computed using publicly availabl information about a person from Facebook, and / or their online dating profile. At the start of the simulated dating session, we will pull the information from each individuals profiles so that the glasses are ‘coded’ by the person holding them.
