Scene Description
In this thoughtless act, we see an individual in black holding a cell phone. He is focusing all his attention on it while crossing the street, but uses the man in front of him as a peripheral guide. Looking out the side of his eye, he can tell when he starts and stops, allowing him to keep texting while safely crossing the street.
Design opportunities
Add periphery cues when full focus is concentrated on a task. For our project, we have tangible tiles which give weight signatures. One opportunity is to display a periphery light to notify a person that they are interacting with the system. Otherwise, they have to look down at the surface to make sure that the system is responding the way they intended.
In a virtual context, our visualization should include a web camera thumbnail located at the edges of the screen. This would allow the user to focus on the interaction while not going back to make sure they are pressing in the incorrect places. Glancing at the thumbnail provides context on how they are interacting with the system.
