AMP: Assisted Metadata Propagation Carrie Burgener, Ben Hill, Dave Hong Jeff's Comments: Great prototype! Looks like you are getting some very interesting first results in playing with various metadata types. One initial nitpick: Use larger text and images in your slides. Very hard to read! I agree with Morgan's comment about history mechanisms. People will want to remember where they been. Perhaps an undo/redo stack plus the option to bookmark settings would be sufficient. I also thought it might be useful to selectively "turn-off" sliders. That way you could eliminate their effect, but later turn them back on without having lost your position. On top of all that, I also agreed with the comment that filtering could be useful. All these features leave you with a bit of a UI design challenge, but one whose solution could be really beneficial to your visualization. Another issue I noticed (and mentioned in class) is how photos get shoved into the gutters of the display. Repulsive forces along the edges could help, as could invisibly tethering all items to the center using weak springs. Come talk to me if you're interested in discussion options here. I really like your ideas for grouping the data. Perhaps a clustering approach would help? The clustering could provide multiple levels of aggregation, and could be leveraged both to provide visual cues (e.g., colored blobs) as well as inform the layout more. Again, I'd be happy to chat if you want any additional pointers along these lines. In the end, this is very cool, and I can see this being a very nice tool for annotating photos. Your tool is much more freeform and versatile than a lot of others I've seen, which could prove to be a win. I'd definitely be interested to see how some user testing would further inform your design! Marti's comments: Neat logo! Very lively and alive. Makes one want to interact with the system. I feel I want to be able to delete photos or downgrade them from view (when there are many similar photos, for example). May want to have a more straightforward way to add tags. An interface like this could be really helpful for tagging, I agree; people could drag and drop into existing groups after starting with an initial group. Will need to make copies in order to assign multiple attributes. Having a slider on location give a cool interactive experience. However, combining in the other sliders may well prove to be too confusing for users. I could see adding an option that stops the jitter after a while, since I think after a while it could get annoying. Morgan suggested a history function; Jeff and I agree this is a good idea. I also like Steve's suggestion of using sliders to filter out some photos, that way you can expose more photos from the collection at a time. Maybe leave a colored visual trail behind the photos as they exchange position Color behind grouping could be really nice. You said this is cluttered beyond 100 photos, so filtering is very important. Great job getting this far!
