 ASSIGNMENT 4 - Ethnography

Pick a place where people work. This could be your place of employment, the basement of South Hall, public areas of a campus library, the South Hall computer lab – someplace you can observe rather unobtrusively.

  1. Construct a map of the area, as recommended by Blomberg et al (p. 304 of the reader, exercise #2).
  2. Unobtrusively observe people's actions in this area and report on them (p. 305 #8).
  3. Interview one other person about their use of this area and their work activities there (following #3, p. 304)
  4. What recommendations would you make for redesign of this area? Consider:
    • layout -furniture
    • equipment
    • whether some activities need to be moved elsewhere, and, if so, why, and into what kind of space
    • other recommendations?

(It's perfectly acceptable for you to conclude that no redesign is necessary)

You may use the methods described by Beyer and Holtzblatt if you wish, but you don't have to.
