Web Sites

The following websites are some on-line versions of what we found to be particularly helpful, representative, or creative instantiations of KM organizations. If you find others that you like and what you like about them, please feel free to e-mail them to us.

Collections/Reference Guides

  • BRINT is a content-rich site, populated with numerous proprietry and externally-linked items about KM, e-business, and technology.
  • The web site for Karl Erik Sveiby, one of the original proponents of intellectual asset management, has a number of resources related to KM such as his Knowledge Management Library, Interactive Tools, and an online learning module in Knowledge Management...the Karl Erik Sveiby Way. This last item is a comprehensive introduction to the concepts of intangible assets and knowledge flows. 
  • The BPR Online Learning Center has resources for reengineering and change management, including tutorials, benchmarking and best practices reports, and a yellow pages.
  • Knowledge Centers is a filtered compendium of information from various sources including writers, publishers, vendors, consultants, and universities. They have organized the collection into five strategic technology areas: Data Warehousing; E-commerce; Internet; Small Office/Home Office, and; Telecommuting.
  • Knowledge Management Central is offered by the International Center for Applied Studies in Information Technology, an institute headed by Stephen Ruth at George Mason University in Virginia. This site provides links, articles, books, case studies, and companies pertaining to KM.
  • David Skyrme, Associates is a for-profit, UK-based "network of experts in the application of global networked information and communications technologies for innovation and sustainable growth."  The site has numerous resources on many aspects of KM.

Publications

  • Knowledge Inc. is the on-line presence of the monthly executive newsletter, of whom one of the editors-at-large is Tom Davenport, co-author with Larry Prusak of "Working Knowledge". The web site includes case studies, interviews with KM practitioners, links to other websites, and news of scheduled events.
  • KM World offers daily news, website reviews, discussion space, upcoming events, and a searchable archive of their past issues. The site also offers free subscriptions for electronic newsletters and the KM World magazine.
  • KM News, is a "free weekly news digest" from Hoyt Consulting.  The company's principal is Brad Hoyt who was most recently Knowledge Systems Manager at USWeb Corporation and who has a background in knowledge-related technology.

Organizations/Communities

  • The American Productivity & Quality Center (APQC) is a benchmarking and best practices research institute and think-tank. They partner with many well-known public and private organizations to create studies and reports, for which the executive summaries can be downloaded at no cost.
  • The Knowledge Management Forum is a non-commercial clearinghouse for, in their words, the "exchange of ideas and information". It accepts information contributions, although the home page indicates the last update was 5/14/96.
  • The Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals was formed in 1986 and almost 80% of its members are practioners.  The organization, in addition to benefits for its members, sponsors forums, conferences, and seminars for the public.  They also provide referrals, conduct surveys, put out a publication, and publish interesting articles on the their site.
  • knowledgecreators.com is a unique site that conducts a "cocreation area" for its registered users to enable them to form teams, while providing guidance on issues such as intellectual property, work and revenue distribution etc. Their services include chat rooms, Web based video conferencing, whiteboarding, billboards--all of which they support with a help desk.
  • The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are two venerable organizations devoted to codification of knowledge.
  • The Information Management Forum is a community space for peers and practitioners to share "candidly" the practical issues and experiences of managing I/S organizations.
