Professional
Organizations
There are only three Knowledge Management (KM) related organizations
that we've identified as presently active, however new groups are emerging
as we write. Professor Michael Buckland of UC Berkeley's School of Information
Management & Systems is currently in the process of establishing a special
interest group in knowledge management within the American
Society for Information Science and is looking for participants. Email
him at buckland@sims.berkeley.edu
if you are interested in joining.
- Knowledge Management Consortium -
"A society of knowledge management scientists, practitioners, and
managers. Developing definitions, standards, and metrics for the KM
industry." This organization appears to be the only official organization
dedicated exclusively to KM. It is relatively new and still getting
its bearings.
- The American Productivity & Quality
Center "(APQC) helps enterprises manage change, improve processes,
leverage knowledge, and increase performance by becoming more agile,
creative, and competitive." APQC conducts a great deal of research
and benchmarking. Its staff also appears as speakers to some KM conferences.
- Association for Information and Image
Management International (AIIM) - "AIIM International is the
leading industry association and trade show for IT professionals in
document intensive businesses. Its mission is to help institutional
users understand document technologies and how they can be applied to
improve critical business and exploding enterprise and Web-based processes.
AIIM's focus is information and process management, including Web-enabled
document management, workflow and industry-specific solutions.
In addition to the three organizations listed here, you may want to
consider looking for informal roundtables for CIOs and CEOs sponsored
by major consulting firms. These often times require invitations. Another
alternative is to look for organizations in areas like anthropology, organizational
learning, and human resources that relate to KM.
