3. What tools did they use for each scenario? Browse vs. Search? Both? Search options?

Scenario 1: P1 – Browse names by Surname and search on start page, P2 – search on start page, P3 – search on start page.

Scenario 2: P1 –search on start page, P2 – search on start page, P3 – search on start page.

Scenario 3: P1 – Advanced Search, P2 – search on start page then Advanced Search, P3 – search on start page then Advanced Search.

4. Do people tend to get lost in frames? If so, where? No one seemed lost.
5. Do they use top-level menu or ignore? Everyone ignored until the very end.
6. Is Advanced Search immediately obvious to users? Wasn’t obvious to any of the users.

P1

• Took longer than expected for first query since she went to Browse instead of search.
• Skipped over correct town name because she wanted to see what her other options were. Ended up paging through some of the names after finding more than one possible pathway. Eventually backtracked to the name she found in the very beginning.
• Used search on start page and then Advanced Search for the second query.
• Was slightly confused by the different kinds of names.
• Initially used Back button then eventually found Home button by the end of the tasks.
• Had moderate difficulty entering in date information. Started in one format, then read search tips and changed to correct format.

P2

• Asked if search was case sensitive.
• Search strategy for T1 – thought Rubinstein would yield too many results so tried Maciejow and Poland.
• Couldn’t use pull-down menu because didn’t have experience with 2-button mouse.
• Used back button to go back to Home.
• Was confused by "other" name. Thought she might have gone to the wrong record.
• Retrieved too many records in T2 and wanted way to "jump ahead".
• Seemed to tire with clicking on next and back in results.
• Thought Revise Search included her previous search criteria.
• Had difficulty finding Advanced Search.
• Enter four-digit year only in Advanced Search.
• Had difficulty finding the submit button within Advanced Search.

P3

• Difficult to clear fields on start page.
• Could finish first query in short period of time.
• Could also finish second query rather quickly – only entered Frank and Netherlands.
• When got to last task, couldn’t figure out right away how to search by date. Said it was not possible then eventually found Advanced Search.
• Within Advanced Search, first entered year in 2-digit format then changed to 4-digit format.
• Had difficulty finding the submit button within Advanced Search.
