Comparative Analysis - Web Event

[back to Assignment 3]

Web Event is marketed as a system that "integrates event calendaring and personal/group calendaring into one enterprise-wide system, providing one view into a universe of calendaring information for employees, partners, and customers. Communicate public event information to your external audiences via your Web site while maintaining internal event, group, and personal calendars on your intranet."

It is currently being used to create the calendars for the UC-Berkeley Haas School of Business and College of Engineering.

Positives:

  • Has a nice list format
  • Has a feature that allows users to create an Intro page highlighting upcoming events
  • Allows users to export events to personal calendaring systems (not tested)
  • Allows calendar owner to customize event data fields
  • Can send the event enterer and calendar administrator an email when an event is entered, and the administrator has the choice of letting events go live automatically, or approving them first.
  • Allows users to subscribe to different calendars, and receive email notifications and reminders about events.

Negatives:

  • The calendar day boxes expand downward if there are many events, and we are not sure if that is the best way to do it.
  • There is no “return to calendar” option from the formatting and Add Event screens. The user must back out or use “cancel” if they decide not to complete the actions on those pages.
  • No spellchecker.
  • Event enterers can't put in links without knowing html.
  • Doesn’t handle repeating events very well
  • The Add Event screen isn't very well designed, as it has an "Add" button both at the bottom of the regular and advanced options, making it hard for the user to tell that there are more options if they don't scroll far enough.
  • When place in a frame with a large header that doesn’t move (as Haas does), it is hard to see the calendar. Engineering has created a better format, allowing the header to be scrolled off the screen.
  • It seems a little confusing that the calendar allows a display which is a conglomeration of multiple different calendars, and that the user must apply a filter to display only the calendar they want to see.
