Comparative Analysis - Calendars.net

[back to Assignment 3]

Calendars.net provides free web-based calendars, with many of the features we would like to include in our application. It is currently being used to create the calendar for the UC-Berkeley International House.

Positives:

  • Calendar administration section makes designing a calendar quite flexible, with many options for choosing colors and display formats.
  • Offers block, list and condensed calendars.
  • Yearly view gives thumbnail calendars for each month, allowing the user to click on a particular date for event information. The user doesn't have to step through the system month by month.
  • Allows the user to enter search text, speciying whether the search should occur in event text or "popup text." The user can also choose a category and a range of dates to search between (month/year - month/year), as well as a display format for the search results (block, list, or condensed).

Negatives:

  • The block calendar is uninteresting and looks like a standard wall calendar.
  • The calendar list displays a line for each day, whether they have events or not.
  • The condensed calendar reduces the display to the timeframe chosen (e.g. day, week month). It is not very helpful and somewhat confusing.
  • Month, Week, and Day views just cut off the other weeks or days and doesn't give the user any type of expanded view.
  • Better for displaying simple, uncomplicated events because there is no way to format lengthy events with big descriptions and/or images.
