One reason to do this assignment is to get more practice doing design. Another is to have done more individual work in the class. A third is to, if desired, attempt to boost your midterm grade.
According to the course syllabus, students' final grades are based on their class project (50%) and a combination of individual work: midterm (30%) and individual project (20%). However, if you like, I am allowing you to use your midterm as the entire 50% of your individual grade. Alternatively, you can use do assignment and thus have the midterm count only 30% towards your final grade.
The kiosk must allow check-in for passengers with bags to check, although it can also work for those who do not need to check bags. It should allow check-in of multiple passengers who are on the same flight and credit card, but should also allow such passengers to check-in individually.
The main design goals should be accuracy, speed, and a stress-free user experience.
Your design should be usable by a wide range of the population including the elderly and people with certain types of disabilities. Your design should also take into account the worst-case conditions of the environment in which the kiosk is used. (You may modify the standard hardware if you like.)
It is up to you how the process is activated (whether a credit card is required, etc) and how it is completed (e.g., printing out a paper boarding pass). You can also design what types of additional functionality to provide (e.g., changing seats, meal selections, indicating a disabled person has arrived so that wheelchairs or electric vehicles can be called, etc.).
Anything not specified here is up to you to determine -- just be certain to state your assumptions.
We estimate that this will require 8-10 hours of work. Try to avoid spending excessive amounts of time on the drawing aspects of sketching; be sure to spend considerable portions of your time thinking through the problems and issues. As a reminder, a polished set of sketches illustrating less-than-satisfactory solutions is less desirable than a somewhat rough set of sketches illustrating truly creative and useful solutions.
