Sophie Lindstrom
Curatorial Assistant, SFMOMA
Motto: "So many books, so little time!"

Sophie is 27 years old and she's been working at SMOMA for 3 years. When she moved to the Bay area 3½ years ago, after finishing her MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design she was sure she would land an interesting job.

Her boy friend wanted to work in the tech industry, but she was more interested in the arts. She knew she was smart and creative, friendly and considerate, and that her contacts from school wouldn't hurt. Coming from a middle class family, she appreciated the benefits a good education would afford her. Her timing was good and her confidence paid off when she was hired as a Curatorial assistant in the photography department at SFMOMA. She now lives in Sausalito and commutes by ferry to San Francisco. She doesn't own a car, and likes it that way. She's an avid reader who doesn't own a TV.

Her friends think of her as "sensitive and poetic", but she thinks of herself as "quiet and intellectual". She is sophisticated, but not a snob. She uses the Web at work for research and she uses email for professional correspondence, but she's never bought into all of the hype about the internet and technology in general. When her technologically savvy friends call her a technophobe, she quietly quips, "so many books, so little time!"

The truth is that she does feel intimidated by computer technology, but would rather have people think that she is philosophically, not emotionally, opposed to the increasing prevalence of technology in society. In her free time she likes to hike in Marin, visit other art museums, and pursue her love of photography. One day, she'd like to be a photography curator, rather than a curatorial assistant.

Sophie's Goals:

1. Advance her curatorial career.
2.
Live an intellectually satisfying life.
3.
Meet needs of the curatorial staff in research, planning and production of exhibitions and publications.
