Personas - Robin

Robin Foster
Producer, Interactive Educational Technology, SFMOMA
Motto: "Let's try it!"

Born in Portland, educated in Seattle, and now living and working in the SF Bay Area, Robin has always lived on the West coast and would like to keep it that way.

After finishing her BA at the University of Washington in Communication, she worked as the project manager for the Seattle Art Museum's Open Studio project, which focused on teaching artists and arts organizations how to create Websites and to analyze the impact of technology on culture. She proved herself to be a good manager and an inspiring team leader.

These skills landed her a job in the Interactive Media division of an educational publisher in San Francisco. After less than a year, she was project manager overseeing curriculum design, content creation, and product production for CD-ROMS and the first wave of educational Websites produced by the company. Pretty soon, her creative vision of how to integrate interactive technology and educational materials began to conflict with the more conservative approach of her company.

She jumped at the chance to work at SFMOMA, hoping that the museum would be more supportive of her ideas. After two years at SFMOMA, her staff think she's great to work for, but sometimes feel that she sets the bar to high and doesn't fully understand the constraints of working in a large, highly bureaucratic non-profit organization.

While she expects a lot from her staff and from herself, Robin is a very balanced person. She likes to drink green tea, rather than coffee, she has a fountain in her office, and more often than not listens to classical music while working. Robin is 36, married and lives in Oakland. She rarely works late in the office, but does take work home with her. She has a new computer, laser printer, and DSL connection in her home office. When she travels on business, she always takes a laptop with her and stays in regular contact with her staff via email and a cell phone.

After all this time, Robin is still inspired by multimedia technology and the convergence of art, education, and technology.

Robin's Goals:
1. Realize her professional vision.
2. Be recognized for the high quality of her work.
3. Expand the ways in which the museum connects with the public.
4. Convince the museum to increase funding for her projects
5. Increase outside funding for her projects Share her projects with other institutions 6. Try new approaches to creating interactive educational materials
7. Complete projects on time and on budget.
