Google+ provides a platform for people to
connect networks, organize interests, share
photos, events, and organize personal information. Google+ is also interoperable with the rest of Google
services. In fact, it is mandatory to sign up for a Google+ account
if you use another Google service. Google has created a personal
information management system by allowing all their services to
interact.
However, the problem with Google+ is that it has millions of users, but very few of them are active members. Not only is Google+ competing with Facebook, but the interface is static and at times confusing. The Google+ problem is a good example of how important UX design is in terms of making a product successful. The redesign of Google+ is an attempt to reorganize the interface to get users to
actually use this product. The items being reorganized are: navigation icons, pictures and videos, new views for google hangouts, posts
from people in your circles, and "Explore" pages. The new design focuses more on
customization; allowing users to organize their own profile the way
they want.
The new functions
supposedly will make the interface more flexible and, hopefully, will draw more
people to actively use Google+. Google saw the lack of activity as a result of poor design. Only
time will tell how effective this new interface will be for Google users.
