The Australian government is contemplating the introduction of "fat tax", an extra tax on all junk food to counter the high rates of obesity and promoting healthy food products. The problem, as pointed out by the article above is, how do you categorize something as junk food? Is it food that has a high percentage of fat, sugar or salt? If so, then, are nuts which are high in omega-3 fatty acids unhealthy? Likewise, will honey and olives also be junk food because they are high in sugar/ salt content? If we think about it in terms of processed foods, white rice, tinned fish etc. all get labeled as junk food as well.
