The Organization and Discovery of Music

In this article, David Young thinks back on the way music was organized.  When he owned cds, his collection was largely piles of "recently played" or "heavy rotation" with a bit of alphabetization here and there.  He also mentions how record stores always suggested obscure and amazing tracks.

With the modern switch to digital media, the way we organize music has completely changed.  The stacks of cds and the physical organization schemes were gone.  Itunes primarily sorts by categories such as song name, artist, genre, playcount, and playlists.  However, David Young found that it was severely lacking in music discovery and organization.

Paul Lamere displayed many graphs and images organizing music and genres, but David viewed it as too technical.  The human editorial component was lacking.  Unsatisfied, he suggests that we need something else.

I personally have found that there are many mechanisms for music organization and discovery.  With the internet, people have found various ways to organize and output music for better music discovery.  Organizing traits vary between genre, musical features, mood, crowdsourcing, and more.  I have searched for varoius websites that tackle this feat.  They are detailed and displayed in the attached files.
