L2R1. R. Glushko, Chapter 1 of "Intellectual Foundations of Information Organization and Information Retrieval "

This is the current draft of the first chapter in a book whose working title is Intellectual Foundations for Information Organization and Information Retrieval, which will extend the seminal book by Elaine Svenonius that has been used in this course for many years.  The book began as a project to turn the lecture notes from 202 as it was taught in 2009 into a book but it has gotten more ambitious.  9 of the 12 chapters are being written at UC Berkeley, most by current and recently graduated ISchool students, with the others being written at UCLA under the direction of Professor Christine Borgman to ensure more comprehensive and integrated coverage of traditional library and information science topics.
