Anyone ever had experience organizing information into the synthesized format of a wikipedia article?

Reading the "From Semantic Integration to Semantics Management: Case Studies and a Way Forward" (Rosenthal et al.) there is a definition for Communities of Interest (COIs) that in my opinion far surpasses wikipedia's definition of COIs.  

• What does it take to update the article?
• Has anyone ever created or edited an article?
• Have you ever seen "author of wikipedia article" on a person's resume?
• Are there metrics for contributing to wikipedia? Different levels on contribution?
• Could we have a contest amongst different i schools on who contributes the most to wikipedia?
• Has wikipedia or any 3rd party ever hosted such a contest?
