During his tenure in the American West, Frederic Remington witnessed the bravery of African American soldiers in battle with Apache Indians. In the 1880s and 1890s, Remington executed a number of paintings portraying the four African American calvary regiments organized as permanent army units by an act of Congress in 1866. Located west of the Mississippi, these calvary units were led by white officers.
