NoteThe Parliament of England enacted in 1649 "An Act for the Promoting and Propagating the Gospel of Jesus Christ in New England." For Eliot's account of his missionary encounters with Native Americans, see his Indian Dialogues. Eliot's translation of the Gospel of Matthew was printed in 1655. It was probably only a sample run, to show how the work would look. The London Commissioners sent a professional printer, Marmaduke Johnson, in 1660 who finished printing the Bible within his 3-year contract. See George Parker Winship, The Cambridge Press 1638-1692 (1946; reprint 1968, Freeport, NY), Chapter X: Printing the Bible in Indian, 208-44.
