Real Time Web is a collection of technlogies that allow immediate and direct web publishing. Real time is perhaps the newest evolution in web technology but in manys ways is more hype than reality. Real time Web has attracted the attention of marketers and those interested in finding new ways to target ads and more actionable user behavior.

  • Instead of asynchronous request/reponse
  • Content is pushed to clients
  • We are all famliar with Instant Messaging(IM)Jabber/ICQ/AOL etc
  • Lacks some reliability present with request/reponse
  • Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP)
  • XMPP is based upon Jabber IM technology

  • Realtime (more like real fast) indexing of tweets
  • Tweet space is not indexed by search Google, Teoma, BING etc..
  • In Google Universe static pages must be indexed (time) and link relations computed, not instant

  • The key is pushing content/data to passive clients without the request/response latency
  • Very timely information, e.g. Haiti Earthquake
  • Content is immediately relevant to your social network, rather than PAGE Rank
  • Not mediated content (think of Charlie Sheen fiasco)
  • Ones social network may potentially close off new info (echo chamber effect)
